Minimum Requirements

To enter the heavy-duty rail engineering yard of Transnet Freight Rail, candidates must satisfy the following entry criteria:
A completed Grade 12 (Matric) with Mathematics and Physical Science (Functional passes, not Mathematical Literacy).
OR
A completed N2, N3, or higher Technical Certificate with passes in Engineering Science, Mathematics, and an engineering trade theory module (e.g., Diesel Trade Theory, Motor Trade Theory, or Fitting and Turning).
Unemployed South African citizens, preferably between the ages of 18 and 35 years.
High mechanical aptitude, structural awareness, and a practical understanding of workshop safety logic.
High physical fitness and stamina to manage heavy-duty machinery parts, handle tools, and walk across active track grids.
Zero color blindness (absolute medical safety requirement for recognizing rail signaling arrays and intricate electrical wire tracing configurations).
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English to read engineering manuals, follow yard instructions, and log safety reports.
Completely clear criminal record history (standard state security vetting and medical safety tracking applies).
Key Responsibilities & Learning Exposure
Trainees develop their operational skills within a locomotive service shed under the strict supervision of qualified engineering artisans:
Learning to position, fuel, and clean heavy locomotive fleets, as well as preparing them for active rail network deployment.
Assisting with basic preventative maintenance tasks—such as checking fluid levels, inspecting structural brake blocks, and changing system filters.
Handling and maintaining heavy workshop tools, industrial cleaning machinery, and automated fluid extraction systems safely.
Moving parts, components, and tool kits across the maintenance bays to assist Artisans during deep mechanical or electrical strip-downs.
Keeping the maintenance shed bays, service pits, and track walkways tidy and clear of oil hazards or scrap components.
Adhering strictly to standard operating safety procedures, rail yard risk guidelines, and the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act.
