Qualifications Offered

  1. Higher Certificate in Emergency Medical Care (1 Year): Entry-level qualification.

  2. Diploma in Emergency Medical Care (2 Years): Mid-level qualification leading to registration as a Paramedic with the HPCSA.

Entry Requirements (General Guide)

Applicants must hold a National Senior Certificate with the following minimum levels:

For the Higher Certificate (1 Year):

  • Higher Certificate endorsement.

  • English (Level 3).

  • Mathematics (Level 3) OR Math Literacy (Level 6).

  • Life Sciences (Level 3) and/or Physical Sciences (Level 3).

  • Meet the minimum Admission Point Score (APS) as defined by the institution.

For the Diploma (2 Years):

  • Diploma endorsement.

  • English (Level 5).

  • Mathematics (Level 3).

  • Life Sciences (Level 3).

  • Physical Sciences (Level 3).

Funding & Bursaries

  • As this is a formal education programme (not a learnership), students are generally responsible for fees.

  • However, ER24 notes that bursaries may be available for deserving candidates based on availability and selection criteria once a position in the programme is secured.

Important Career Note

The old "short course" route to becoming a paramedic ended in 2017. The only recognized pathway now is through these formal higher education qualifications.
