Gauteng Provincial Government: General Worker (Cleaner) 2026

The Gauteng Department of Health and other provincial departments (including Education and Social Development) are recruiting General Workers to serve as Cleaners in hospitals, clinics, and government offices across the province. This is an essential entry-level role focused on maintaining a hygienic, safe, and professional environment for the public and healthcare workers.

2. Minimum Requirements

The government seeks reliable, hardworking individuals who take pride in their work:

  • Education: Grade 10 (Standard 8) or equivalent. A Grade 12 (Matric) is welcomed but not mandatory.

  • Experience: Previous cleaning experience in a professional setting (hospital, school, or corporate office) is an advantage.

  • Skills: * Basic literacy (ability to read labels on cleaning chemicals).

    • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

    • Knowledge of cleaning equipment and materials.

  • Attributes: High level of honesty, physical fitness (standing and walking for long shifts), and a commitment to Batho Pele (People First).

3. Key Responsibilities

Cleaners are responsible for the overall sanitation of provincial facilities:

  • Sanitation: Cleaning and disinfecting floors, windows, walls, and surfaces in wards, offices, and public waiting areas.

  • Waste Management: Emptying dustbins and ensuring the correct disposal of medical waste (red bags) versus general waste.

  • Ablution Maintenance: Deep cleaning and disinfecting toilets, basins, and showers, ensuring they are stocked with soap and paper towels.

  • Equipment Care: Operating and maintaining cleaning machinery (floor polishers/vacuum cleaners) and reporting any faults.

  • Safety Compliance: Placing "Wet Floor" signs and following Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) protocols to prevent slips and falls.

  • Ad-hoc Duties: Assisting with the movement of furniture or medical equipment when required.

4. How to Apply

Applications must be submitted via the Gauteng provincial e-Recruitment system. Note: Hand-delivered applications are often not accepted at larger facilities.

  1. Online Portal: Create a profile and apply via the Gauteng Professional Job Centre.

  2. Required Documents:

    • A comprehensive CV.

    • A fully completed and signed New Z83 Form (ensure the Ref Number is correct).

  3. Certification Note: In line with 2026 DPSA regulations, you do not need to attach certified copies of ID or certificates at the initial stage. These are only required if you are shortlisted for an interview.

  4. Reference Number: You must use the specific reference number for the hospital or clinic you are applying to (e.g., Ref: HRM/2026/15).

5. Important Advice for 2026

  • The "Infection Control" Focus: If applying for a hospital role, mention your understanding of Infection Prevention and Control (IPC). Knowing that a hospital requires "clinical" cleanliness rather than just "house" cleanliness is a major plus.

  • Chemical Safety: In an interview, talk about the importance of PPE (Gloves, Masks, Aprons) and how you ensure chemicals aren't mixed dangerously.

  • Reliability: Since cleaning is a critical service, emphasize your punctuality and ability to work shifts (including nights or weekends) if needed.

  • Z83 Precision: Ensure you sign and date your Z83 form. An unsigned form is the most common reason for disqualification.

6. Why Join the Gauteng Provincial Government?

  • Comprehensive Benefits: Includes a 13th cheque (service bonus), medical aid subsidy (GEMS), and pension fund (GEPF).

  • Job Security: Permanent government employment offers long-term stability and a path to retirement.

  • Career Growth: Many Cleaners use this as a foot in the door to eventually move into LaundryFood Services, or Porter roles with further internal training.

  • Dignity of Work: You are an "unsung hero"—without clean hospitals and schools, the government cannot function.

Tip: When describing your experience on the Z83 or CV, don't just say "I cleaned." Say: "Maintained high standards of hygiene and sanitation in a high-traffic public facility to ensure a safe environment for staff and visitors."
