  • Education (Option B): N3 Engineering Certificate with passes in Mathematics, Engineering Science, and a relevant trade theory (e.g., Motor or Diesel Trade Theory).

    • Willingness to work in a rural or farm-based environment.

    • Ability to work with both heavy mechanical components and advanced electronic diagnostic tools.

    • Disciplined, safety-conscious, and ready to work in a team.

3. Key Responsibilities

Apprentices are trained at AFGRI workshops and the AFGRI Equipment Training Centre:

  • Mechanical Repairs: Learning to strip, repair, and reassemble engines, transmissions, and hydraulic systems on tractors, harvesters, and sprayers.

  • Precision Technology: Working with GPS-guided steering systems and onboard diagnostic computers (John Deere Service Advisor).

  • Preventative Maintenance: Performing routine servicing and oil sampling to ensure peak performance during critical planting and harvesting seasons.

  • Field Service: Assisting qualified technicians with on-site repairs directly on farms.

  • Safety & Admin: Maintaining a clean workspace and accurately completing logbooks to track progress toward the Trade Test.

4. How to Apply

AFGRI utilizes a centralized online recruitment system. Hand-delivered CVs are rarely accepted at branches for this specific intake.

  1. Online Portal: Apply via the AFGRI Careers Page.

  2. Search: Look for "Apprentice" or the specific reference for the "40 Apprenticeship" post.

  3. Required Documents:

    • A detailed, professional CV.

    • A copy of your ID.

    • A copy of your Matric Certificate or N-Certificate results.

  4. Selection: Shortlisted candidates will undergo a technical aptitude test and a formal interview.

5. Important Advice for 2026

  • Agricultural Passion: AFGRI isn't just about "fixing cars." In your application, express an interest in the agricultural sector and food security.

  • Diagnostic Skills: Modern tractors are "computers on wheels." If you have any interest in electronics or computer-based diagnostics, make sure to highlight this.

  • Location Flexibility: Since there are 40 spots across South Africa, mention if you are willing to relocate to different farming hubs (e.g., Free State, Mpumalanga, or North West).

  • Safety Mindset: Working with massive harvesters and high-pressure hydraulics is dangerous. Emphasize your commitment to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS).

6. Why Join AFGRI?

  • World-Class Training: You will be trained on John Deere equipment, which is some of the most advanced machinery globally.

  • Red Seal Qualification: Upon passing your Trade Test, you will be a Qualified Artisan, a skill that is in high demand and offers excellent salary prospects.

  • Career Diversity: AFGRI technicians can move into roles like Service Manager, Technical Support Specialist, or even Precision Ag Sales.

  • Industry Stability: Agriculture is the backbone of the economy; qualified tractor technicians rarely face unemployment.

Tip: Since you are interested in simulation and modeling, you might find the Precision Ag (GPS/Mapping) side of this trade very interesting. It involves a lot of data and system integration!
