6. Important Advice for 2026

  • Duration: At 24 months, this is one of the longest government internships available, offering significantly better experience than 12-month programmes.

  • Safety & Field Work: If applying for Forestry or Fisheries, mention your willingness to work in outdoor or marine environments.

  • Z83 Signature: Ensure your Z83 is signed and dated correctly. An unsigned form is an automatic disqualification.

  • The "3-Month" Rule: If you haven't been contacted within three months of the 20 March closing date, consider your application unsuccessful.

7. Why Join DFFE?

  • Sustainability: You will be at the forefront of South Africa's response to climate change and biodiversity loss.

  • Specialized Training: Gain exposure to unique sectors like Ocean Governance and Timber Regulation.

  • Public Service Career: Experience within a national department is highly regarded for future roles in provincial government or NGOs like the WWF or SANParks.

Tip: If you have any volunteer experience in community clean-ups, tree planting, or wildlife clubs, be sure to highlight this! The Department values candidates who show a genuine passion for the environment beyond just their academics.
