Artscape, in partnership with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), has opened its 2026 Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) internships. This 12-month programme is designed for young creatives and technical enthusiasts in the Western Cape who want to gain "behind-the-scenes" experience in a world-class performing arts environment.

2. Available Positions & Stipends
Artscape offers different roles depending on your interests and qualifications. The stipend is paid daily based on your level of education:
Graduate (3-year qualification): R243 per day
Grade 12 (Matric): R162 per day
Available Roles:
Marketing Administrator (Graduate): Focuses on digital content, social media management, and graphic design using tools like Adobe Creative Suite.
Lighting Intern: Technical setup, maintenance, and operation of theatre lighting systems.
Sound Intern: Audio engineering, mic setups, and soundboard operation during live shows.
Stage Management Intern (2 Positions): Coordination of rehearsals, managing props, and ensuring smooth transitions during live productions.
3. Minimum Requirements
To qualify for the 2026 intake, you must meet these criteria:
Education: Grade 12 (for Technical roles) OR a Diploma/Degree in Marketing/Graphic Design (for the Marketing role).
Residency: Must reside in the Western Cape (Proof of address is usually required).
Citizenship: South African citizens only.
Languages: Must be articulate in at least two of the province's predominant languages (English, Afrikaans, or IsiXhosa).
Criminal Record: Must have a clean record with no pending cases.
Interests: A genuine passion for the performing arts and technical theatre operations is essential.
4. Key Responsibilities
Hands-on Training: Work alongside industry professionals during professional theatre productions.
Technical Setup: Assist with rigging lights, sound checks, and stage automation.
Digital Content: (Marketing only) Capture production photos, edit video showreels, and manage social media engagement.
Admin & Compliance: Submit monthly activity reports and adhere to all Health & Safety (PPE) protocols.
Overtime: Be prepared to work evenings and weekends, as theatre schedules revolve around performance times.

6. Important Advice
Statement of Results: Artscape specifically asks for your academic transcripts or statement of results—do not forget to attach these, or your application may be rejected.
Adobe Knowledge: For the Marketing role, having a portfolio or mentioning your specific skills in Photoshop, Premiere Pro, or Canva will be a major advantage.
PPE & Safety: In your interview, showing an awareness of "Backstage Safety" (like wearing dark clothing and following rigger instructions) shows you are ready for the environment.
The "4-Week" Rule: If you don't hear back within 4 weeks of the closing date (15 March), consider your application unsuccessful.
