The Safety and Security Sector Education and Training Authority (SASSETA) offers "Discretionary Grants – Unemployed Bursaries" to support South African students pursuing careers that strengthen the safety and security sector.

2. Fields of Study Covered

While the bursary focuses on safety and security, it covers several broad areas:

3. Coverage Values

The bursary provides different levels of funding based on the type of study:

  • Full-time Students: Up to R80,000 (Tuition, registration, books, accommodation, and meals) + an electronic device (laptop/tablet) up to R10,000.

  • TVET Students: Up to R50,000 (Tuition, registration, books, accommodation, and meals).

  • Distance Learning: Up to R35,000 (Registration, tuition, and books).

  • Postgraduate: Research-related expenses (printing, editing, thesis/dissertation costs).


4. Minimum Eligibility Requirements

  • Citizenship: South African citizen.

  • Age: Between 18 and 35 years old.

  • Employment Status: Must be unemployed.

  • Institution: Must be registered at a Public University, University of Technology, or TVET College. (Private institutions are only considered if the course is not offered at a public one).

  • Financial Status: Priority given to households earning less than R600,000 per year (Missing Middle and Poor households).

  • Exclusion: Must not be currently participating in any other SASSETA-funded programme (learnership, internship, etc.).


5. How to Apply

  2. Submission: Email the form and all documents to Bursaries@SASSETA.org.za.

6. Required Supporting Documentation

All copies must be certified and not older than 6 months.

  • ID Document.

  • Matric Certificate or final results.

  • Recent Academic Record (if already at university).

  • Proof of Registration/Acceptance for 2026 (on institution letterhead).

  • Proof of Household Income (Affidavit confirming total income and employment status of parents/guardians).

  • Total email attachment size must not exceed 20MB.
