2. Fields of Study Covered

Bursaries are awarded exclusively for research within Medical Virology at the following levels:

  • BSc Honours (Virology focus)

  • MSc (Virology research)

  • PhD (Virology research)


3. Minimum Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Citizenship: Preference is given to South African citizens or permanent residents.

  • Registration: Must be registered for a BSc (Hons), MSc, or PhD degree with a research project in Virology.

  • Academic Record: Must have achieved a minimum overall average of 60% in the most recent year of study.

  • Employment: The PRF does not support full-time employees (salary-receiving).

  • Commitment: Students may not change their research project without prior approval from the PRF.


4. How to Apply

The application process consists of three specific steps:

  • Step 1: Online Application – Complete the relevant online form on the PRF website based on your level (BSc Hons, MSc New, PhD New, etc.).

  • Step 2: Upload Documents – Upload the required files (see list below) directly onto the online portal.

  • Step 3: Email Submission – Download and complete the PRF Final Bursary Form and email it to prf@nicd.ac.za. Use the subject line: "PRF Bursary Application – [Your Level]".


5. Required Supporting Documentation

  • Curriculum Vitae (Maximum 2 pages, including any publications).

  • Certified ID Document or proof of residency.

  • Full Academic Record (Certified).

  • Proof of Registration at a South African university.

  • Grants Application Signatory Form (available on the PRF portal).

  • Proof of previous degree completion (BSc for MSc applicants; MSc for PhD applicants).

  • Supervisor Progress Report (for PhD applicants or renewal candidates).
